Topic: Accelerating materials development and innovation using the CALPHAD method

Time: Nov. 18, 2024 AM 9:10 ~10:20

Location: Room 102, Boya Lecture Building

Summary of Speech:

CALPHAD, which stands for Computer Coupling of Phase Diagrams and Thermochemistry, was initially developed to calculate phase equilibria and the underlying thermodynamic properties. Over time, the scope of CALPHAD has expanded beyond traditional thermochemistry to include other phase-based properties such as atomic mobility, molar volume, thermal conductivity and diffusivity, electrical resistivity, elastic constants, viscosity and surface tension of liquid.
One of the notable strengths of the CALPHAD method is its ability to extrapolate materials property data from unary, binary and ternary systems to higher-order systems where information is rarely available. This capability makes CALPHAD an indispensable tool in engineering and industrial applications, where materials are often multi-component systems.
This talk will demonstrate how CALPHAD can accelerate materials development and innovation. By showcasing several application examples, covering various materials such as steels, high entropy alloys, aluminium alloys, we will illustrate how CALPHAD aids in improving products, optimizing processing conditions, and designing new materials with required properties.
