演講摘要:

Noble metals such as platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) are important next-generation energy materials for catalysis and fuel cell technology. Nevertheless, noble metals are very expensive due to thier scarcity on earth so that the development of the technology depends on seeking new approaches to reduce the amount of noble metals used in a specific application. Controlling the bounded facets, the morphology and the surface-area-to-volume-ratio of Pt or Pd crystals provides an elegant approach to improve their catalysis for energy conversion and storage. In noble metal system, crystallographic control over the nucleation and growth of nanocrystals has been widely achieved using colloidal methods. In this talk I will share our efforts in decoding the origin of selective molecular adsorption on noble metal facets, which is key to control the crystallographic facets, shapes and sizes through the bottom-up approach. The selection of facet specific molecules and their abilities in guiding shape control of noble metal nanocrystals will be demonstrated. The experimental and theoretical studies on binding mechanism will also be discussed. At last, our discoveries will be applied to bottom-up assembly of colloidal nanocrystals into organized and complex nanostructures. Our studies show the advances in noble metal materials synthesis and processing, achieving the development of efficient, robust and economic catalytic materials for energy applications.
