演講題目:
Cluster Structures and Magnetic Properties of Two Cobalt-based Metallic Glasses
半導體矽晶圓製程簡介與矽晶圓於太陽能之應用
摘要:
First speech:
Atomic scale structures of metallic glasses are known to dictate a lot of properties, for instance, glass forming ability, mechanical and magnetic properties, etc., of the material. Based on a modified cluster model, two CoSiB metallic glasses (Co63.1B27Si9.9 and Co65B24.4Si10.6) with good mechanical properties and different physical properties have recently been developed by addition of solute atoms within their solubility limit to enhance glass forming ability (GFA). Despite the similar compositions, these two metallic glasses exhibit very different magnetic behaviors. We elucidate the atomic structure of these two metallic glasses by extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). The experimental spectra were in good agreement with the predictions of ab initio full multiple scattering theory using the FEFF8.4 code. Besides, the origin of these magnetic behaviors was discussed in view of the EXAFS results and cluster structures of the metallic glasses. This finding has demonstrated that despite the similar compositions, these two metallic glasses consist of different clusters, and hence different magnetic properties, which are dominated by short-range orders (SROs).

In the seminar, the research activities in the Department of Physics and Materials Science, City University of Hong Kong will also be briefly introduced.

Second speech:
Brief biography:

Prof. C. H. Shek got his BSc in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) and PhD from The University of Hong Kong (HKU). Before joining City University of Hong Kong, he worked as an engineer in the Kowloon and Canton Railway Corporation in Hong Kong. His research interests are on the microstructure and properties relationship of bulk metallic glasses, nanocrystalline ceramic and other metallic alloys. He has co-authored over 170 papers in international refereed journals and three book chapters. He also co-own two PRC patents. Prof. Shek has also reviewed research proposals for Australian Research Council and National Science Council of Taiwan. He has acted as expert consultant on numerous cases related to industrial accidents and failure analysis of engineering components to HKSAR Government and major companies in Hong Kong.
