Qualification Examination for International Doctoral Degree Students (PDF)

International doctoral degree students have two options for passing the qualification examination, as described below:

Option 1:

A student can submit a written progress report including his/her proposed future research to the Department Curriculum Committee for review before the start of the student's third year of study. The Department Curriculum Committee will determine whether the student passes or fails the qualification examination upon reviewing his/her progress report. The thesis advisor(s) of the student in question shall be excluded from the committee.

Option 2:

International doctoral students can choose to fulfill the same requirements for the qualification examination as those for local doctoral students. For more information, please refer to the article Academic Regulations for Doctoral Degree Students.

In the case that an international doctoral student cannot obtain enough credits for the qualification examination exemption requirements and graduation requirements due to the lack of English-taught courses offered by the NTU MSE department, the student is allowed to take English-taught courses related to materials science and engineering offered by the NTU system; at the start of each semester, such a student is required to submit a list of courses to be taken that semester, with the approval and signature of his/her dissertation advisor(s), to the Department Curriculum Committee.
