Academic Regulations for Master’s Degree Students (PDF)

 Credits and Curriculum:

A Master's student is required to obtain at least 27 credits during his/her Master’s study towards graduation. Additionally, starting from August 2018, a Master’s student is required to take at least three semesters of the ‘M. S. Special Topics’ course, whose credits do not count towards graduation. A Master’s student is also required to take the online ‘Academic ethics’ course which carries no credit. The required allocation of the 27 graduation credits is as follows:

(1) 3 credits from taking the ‘Seminar’ course offered by the department of materials science and engineering (MSE) for three semesters;

(2) 6 or more credits from taking the fundamental courses (see list below) offered by MSE;

(3) 12 or more credits from taking the specialized courses (see list below) offered by MSE;

(4) Up to 6 credits from the graduate-level courses offered by other departments at NTU, taken with the approval of the student’s thesis advisor.

Fundamental Courses:

Thermodynamics of Materials (offered in Mandarin only)

Kinetics of Materials (offered in Mandarin only)

Phase Transformation (offered in Mandarin only)

Mechanical Behavior of Materials (offered in English)

Electron Microscopy (offered in Mandarin only)

X-ray Diffraction (offered in English)

Specialized Courses:

The specialized courses consist of all graduate-level courses offered by the MSE department apart from the fundamental courses listed above. ‘Seminar’ , ‘M. S. Thesis’ andM. S. Special Topics’ are not specialized courses.

Credits Transfer:

For the Master’s students who have taken graduate-level courses offered by NTU MSE or other departments before they enter the Master’s program, they are allowed to transfer the credits of up to two of those courses with the approvals of both their advisors and the Department Curriculum Committee, provided the requirements listed below are met.

(1) To transfer the credits of a graduate-level course taken previously from the NTU MSE department, the applicant must be ranked among the top 50% of the class of the course.

(2) To transfer the credits of a graduate-level course taken previously from other departments, the applicant must have received a grade of A- or better in the course. No more than 1 course taken previously from other departments is transferrable. The subject of the course to be transferred must reasonably match that of an MSE graduate-level course offered within three years from the date of application. The applicant is required to submit an application form signed by his/her advisor(s) with the syllabus of the course and his/her official academic transcript showing his/her grade in the course to the Department Curriculum Committee for approval.

Any course-related dispute from a Master’s student should be submitted with the approval of his/her thesis advisor(s) to the Department Curriculum Committee for consideration.
