演講摘要：

 

Most graduate schools teach students how to survey scientific literature, identify meaningful scientific questions, and devise experiments to solve the problems.  However, few graduate schools offer formal instruction to actively assist students in acquiring essential skills for becoming a good scientist; it is generally assumed that students will “get it” anyway.  These essential skills include, but not limited to, giving an effective talk, writing a fundable proposal, and gaining managerial competence.  It has not escaped my attention that Taiwan’s higher education is abysmally insufficient in this regard, in sharp contrast to what I have experienced in US as a faculty member at the Ohio State University.  For example, a “collective-waste-of-time” syndrome is so prevalent here in seminar and/or journal club done by many graduate students and even some faculty members, unfortunately.  This talk therefore seeks to provide a conceptual framework regarding how to effectively communicate science through oral presentation, in the hope that such a deep-seated problem may be somewhat mitigated.  Specific examples of both the dos and the don’ts will be provided to sharpen the conceptual framework.
