演講摘要(Summary of speech):

The directed and self-assembly of colloidal particles offer a fascinating approach to creating nanostructured materials. Effective design in this realm is contingent on a deep understanding of the underlying principles and mechanisms that drive structure formation. With this objective in mind, colloids have proven to be an exceptionally informative system for investigating the emergent structures and behaviors of large collections of simple particles. This is due to the experimentally accessible time and length scales for observing colloids, as well as our ability to manipulate interparticle interactions. Additionally, the application of electric and magnetic fields enables not only the directed assembly but also the propulsion of colloids. When confined to surfaces, colloids exhibit complex competing interactions, leading to rich and often surprising collective structures and dynamics. These phenomena can be anticipated and explained through theoretical frameworks and Monte Carlo simulation (Maestas et al., ACS Nano 2021, 15, 2399).
In this presentation, I will discuss our research integrating experiments and modeling to explore various self-assembled structures. These include 1) the spontaneous formation of "colloidal molecules" and their subsequent reactions, 2) the assembly of regular and frustrated arrays of spheres and of dimers, 3) spontaneous assembly and propulsion of chiral clusters, and 4) the formation and deformation of a novel class of bilayer quasicrystals.
The methodologies for directed assembly we discuss, such as applying normal fields and asymmetric surface confinement, are broadly applicable and largely independent of the chemical nature of the colloids. We anticipate that these strategies can be leveraged across a diverse array of material systems.
