演講題目：Synergizing Ferroelectric, Piezoelectric, Light, and Electrochemical Innovations for Enhanced Energy Efficiency

演講摘要：

As the world strives to reduce carbon foot-print, many technologies and electronic devices are advancing towards energy efficiency to reduce energy consumption supporting the global carbon net-zero ambition. Here, we explore the interconnection of ferroelectric, piezoelectric, light, and electrochemistry to create synergies for making progress in energy efficiency in several applications, namely i) photoelectrode and ii) optoelectromechanical sensors and actuators. For the photoelectrode, we study the electrical interactions between a bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) film and an aqueous environment, coupling the ferroelectric (Fe) - photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity to achieve efficient charge transfer. Features such as crystal orientation, ferroelectric polarization, cocatalyst, strategic doping, surface chemistry, polarization switching in aqueous environment, as well as the ability to control electrolytic conduction in the semiconductor-electrolyte interface will be presented. We expect Fe-PEC activity could provide substantial progress in ferroelectric supercapacitor for energy storage purposes. For the latter, we demonstrate that indium gallium nitride (InGaN)/ gallium nitride (GaN) multiple quantum wells (MQWs) give rise to  by 38-50% under illumination through the combined use of Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). The driving mechanism of such behavior can be attributed to superposition of light-induced surface electric field and converse piezoelectric effect, which involves a three-way coupling of electronic, piezoelectric, and optical properties of the InGaN/GaN MQWs. This could be used in developing chips with both optical and electronic functionality essential to realizing next-generation applications such as photonic computing.
